10 year memorial of eric garner

In 2014 we experienced a national uproar for justice in ways not seen since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. This was sparked by the tragic death of Eric Garner after being placed under arrest for allegedly selling loose cigarettes.

The argument around individual prejudice is not enough on its own in the larger fight for justice. Unfortunately these issues are not yet behind us as recently seen, Frank Tyson died under similar circumstances, barely reaching national news.

July 17, 2024, will make 10 years since Eric Garner struggled to say the words, “I can’t breathe,” before taking his last breath. On this day let us breathe new life into the movement that his death set in motion. It’s time we create a new narrative around justice focusing on upstream solutions rather than conveniently responding after another viral incident of injustice. This is what it means to BE PRO-ACTIVE.
